While some may have limited hours, customers can expect to find food options available at most major fast-food and sit-down restaurants. Here's a list of popular chains that will be open:

  • McDonald's: Most locations will be open, but store hours may vary.

While you can get a bite to eat, remember that banks and post offices will be closed for the federal holiday. The Fourth of July marks the anniversary of American Independence, which, according to a letter by John Adams to his daughter, Abigail, was first celebrated with a "spontaneous celebration" in Philadelphia. The holiday became an annual observance after the War of 1812, and Congress made it a federal holiday in 1870.
