California Bars Now Required to Offer Drug Testing Kits to Prevent Drink Spiking

As of July 1, bars and clubs with liquor licenses in California are mandated to sell or provide customers with drug testing kits to prevent drink spiking, under Assembly Bill No. 1013. The law, in effect until 2027, includes displays of signs informing customers of the availability of the kits. Businesses must offer the kits for free or for sale, with the bill stipulating no responsibility for inaccurate test results, but ensuring kits are not expired. The kits detect controlled substances like flunitrazepam, ketamine, and GHB, a colorless liquid or powder that increases passivity and libido, commonly mixed with alcohol in assaults, according to Alcohol.org.

"This is only the first step to protecting our community. In the new legislative year, I will be reintroducing AB 1524 to bring test strips to (community colleges) and (California state universities) as well" Assembly member Josh Lowenthal (D).
