Hurricane Beryl Heads Towards Texas After Lashing Jamaica, Cayman Islands

Portions of South Texas are now in the path of Hurricane Beryl, which is expected to hit the state early Monday. Tropical-storm-force winds could reach South Texas as early as Saturday evening.

"Additional weakening is expected [...] though Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean."
— National Hurricane Center

According to the National Hurricane Center, the Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 145 mph is moving west-northwest at 20 mph. It is forecast to pass near Jamaica and the Cayman Islands before making landfall in the Yucatan Peninsula Friday.

The NHC predicts weakening but stresses that Beryl will remain a powerful hurricane as it passes through the Caribbean.

This weakening may shift the storm's path north or northwest, toward the western Gulf of Mexico, as reported by The Weather Channel. This change increases the risk to South Texas.
