Hurricane Beryl May Hit South Texas After Striking Jamaica and the Caymans

Portions of South Texas are now within Hurricane Beryl's forecast cone. The state could feel the impact as early as Saturday evening, with the core of the storm arriving on Monday.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Beryl is expected to pass through Jamaica on Wednesday, bringing life-threatening winds and storm surges. As of Tuesday, it weakened slightly to a Category 4 storm with sustained winds of 145 mph, moving west-northwest at 20 mph.

"Additional weakening is expected... though Beryl is forecast to remain a hurricane in the northwestern Caribbean."
- National Hurricane Center, July 2nd, 5 a.m. advisory.

The NHC predicts that Beryl will pass near or over Jamaica and the Cayman Islands before moving over the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico early Friday. This weakening may cause a shift in the path, moving north or northwest toward the western Gulf of Mexico, according to The Weather Channel. This change increases the risk for South Texas.
