Here's what you need to know about Real IDs:

What Is It?
The REAL ID Act, passed in 2005, sets security standards for identification documents, like driver's licenses. Texas began issuing compliant cards in 2016, marked with a gold circle and star in the top-right corner.

Do I Need It to Fly Domestically?
Not yet, but by May 7, 2025, all states must comply. After that, a Real ID or another form of federal ID (like a passport) is needed for domestic flights.

How to Get One in Texas
Texas.Gov says to apply in person at a TX Department of Public Safety office. You may be able to renew your current license online. Your current license is still valid for driving and non-federal ID. Renewal will get you a Real ID-compliant license.

Can It Replace a Passport?
No, Real IDs are for domestic travel only. Passports are still needed for international flights.

Identification
Your current Texas driver's license should have a gold star in the top-right corner if it's compliant. If not, you will get one at renewal or by requesting a replacement.
