Hurricane Beryl Leaves Caribbean, Heads for Cayman Islands and Mexico

Hurricane Beryl, which ripped through the Caribbean as a Category 4 to 5 storm, is now headed for the Cayman Islands and Mexico, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Beryl weakened to a Category 4 storm on Tuesday, but not before leaving a trail of destruction and at least 10 people dead in Jamaica, Reuters reported. The death toll is expected to rise as communication is restored. At least three deaths have been reported in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency reported that over 90% of homes and buildings were destroyed or severely damaged on at least three Windward Islands.

With Beryl's new path forecasted to hit Texas, Cameron County has issued a voluntary evacuation notice for residents in RVs, trailers, and county parks.

Beryl made history as the earliest recorded Category 5 hurricane, surpassing Hurricane Emily (July 17, 2005) by over two weeks.
