A Yellowstone visitor is dead and a ranger injured following a standoff with law enforcement at the National Park according to officials.

Gunfire Exchange in Yellowstone National Park Leaves One Ranger Injured, Suspect Dead

A park ranger was injured and a suspect killed in an exchange of gunfire in Yellowstone National Park, according to a statement from the National Park Service (NPS) on Thursday.

Rangers received a report that a person with a gun was making threats in the Canyon Village area... Rangers made contact, exchanging gunfire with the individual. - NPS statement

The incident occurred overnight on Wednesday, resulting in the death of the suspect and injury to a Yellowstone law enforcement park ranger, who is now in stable condition at a regional hospital.

The NPS has stated that there is no ongoing threat to the public, but the area around the Canyon Lodge complex has been closed for a joint investigation between the NPS and the FBI.

Fatalities in national parks are rare, with the NPS recording only 43 homicides between 2007 and May 21, 2024.
