What's Open on July 4? Walmart, Costco, Banks, Target, Post Office, Grocery, Restaurants

Banks and post offices will be closed Thursday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day, but most major restaurant, grocery and retail chains will remain open. The stock market will also be closed.

According to the Library of Congress, the origins of the Fourth of July date back to when Philadelphians marked the first anniversary of American independence with a "spontaneous celebration." Congress made it a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.

Walmart, Target, Costco Hours

  • Walmart: Open 6 a.m.-11 p.m., though the company suggests checking with your local store.
  • Costco: All warehouses closed.
  • Target: Open, but hours vary.

Groceries Open July 4

  • Trader Joe's: All stores close at 5 p.m.
  • Sam's Club: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. for Plus members, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. for Club members

  • All U.S. Postal Service facilities closed; no regular mail delivery.
  • UPS pickup and delivery services will not be available and UPS Store locations may be closed, per the company's website.
  • FedEx pickup and delivery services also won't be available, per the company's website. FedEx Office hours will be modified.

Home Improvement Stores Open July 4

  • Lowe's (closing at 8 p.m. local time)
  • Ace Hardware

Pharmacies Open July 4

  • Walgreens: Open regular hours
  • Rite Aid: A majority of locations will be open, but check the website for hours.
