Four people were injured in a shark attack on South Padre Island, Texas, on July 4. Two individuals sustained bites, with one transported to a local medical center and the other airlifted for treatment. Texas Game Warden Captain Chris Dowdy stated the attacks occurred near Wanna Wanna Beach Bar and Grill and are suspected to have been carried out by a single shark over a two-hour period.

The U.S. Coast Guard deployed resources to monitor the area and ensure beachgoers' safety. Despite the attacks, shark attacks are rare, with a lifetime risk of one in four million, according to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File (ISAF). Texas counties with the highest reports of shark attacks include Galveston (19) and Nueces (12). The shark responsible for the South Padre Island attacks escaped to open waters and is not being pursued. Beachgoers are advised to remain vigilant and exit the water calmly if they spot any sharks.
