Hays County District Clerk Avrey Anderson resigns amid removal proceedings

In a resignation letter sent to Hays County district judges on Friday, 19-year-old District Clerk Avrey Anderson announced his resignation, citing intense scrutiny and stress. "I do not believe it is good for justice and the courts for me to continue...perhaps one day I will be able to get back into government," he wrote, adding he's attracted "negative attention.".

Last month, Anderson faced allegations of incompetence, negligence, and fostering a hostile work environment. Judge Amy Clark Meachum heard testimony on logistical issues and Anderson's antics, with officials detailing missing filings and undelivered subpoenas. First Assistant DA Gregg Cox testified about absent juries, saying: "Mr. Anderson did not seem aware that he needed to be doing that." Deputy Clerk Maximiliano Hernandez expressed dismay over Anderson's treatment of employees, stating: "It's frustrating...it's embarrassing to have this case filed against our office."

Anderson defended his changes, like automating notifications, and felt unfairly criticized. "I was elected at 19 and every move...has been under a microscope," he wrote. "I do not believe I am incompetent...I have made mistakes, but leaving won't prevent them." The judges will appoint a replacement, and Hernandez was expected to fill the role temporarily.
