Malfunctioning Ride Injures Six at Independence Day Carnival

A ride malfunction at Oak Harbor's Independence Day Carnival left six people with minor injuries, officials said. The carnival closed Wednesday night after a spinning swing ride tipped over. Firefighters and paramedics treated the injured on-site.

"This happened on a fairly tame ride. Imagine if the Zipper were to crap out like this," said a concerned Facebook user, referring to a more intense ride.

[Photos and videos] shared on social media show the ride lying on its side. Alex Bennett, a witness, said her son was on the ride when it tipped. She told Storyful:

"That was my priority to get him out and then I ran back to help a woman who had hurt her leg/knee while my husband was getting another person who was stuck in a seat unstuck. It could have been way worse.”

"Our priority is to thoroughly investigate and take all necessary measures to maintain safety," said Police Chief Tony Slowik and Mayor Ronnie Wright.
