Tropical Storm Beryl Intensifies, Takes Aim at Texas as a Category 1 Hurricane

Days after its second landfall, Tropical Storm Beryl is gaining strength and expected to hit Texas as a Category 1 hurricane.

Beryl Breaks Records, Heads for Texas

On Monday, Beryl made landfall in Grenada's Carriacou Island as a Cat 4, then strengthened into the earliest-recorded Cat 5, stunning experts with its rapid intensification. Beryl is also the earliest recorded Cat 4.

As of Saturday, Beryl was 495 miles southeast of Corpus Christi, with sustained winds of 60 mph, moving WNW at 12 mph.

The Forecast and Warnings:

  • Track: Beryl is forecast to turn NW Saturday, then NNW by Sunday night.
  • Strength: It will intensify into a Cat 1 before landfall on Monday, though the NWS advises residents to prepare for Cat 2.
  • Timing: Tropical-storm-force winds are likely Sunday evening, with potential for widespread heavy rain.
  • Warnings: A hurricane watch is in effect for the Texas coast from the Rio Grande to San Luis Pass, and Mexico's coast from Barra el Mezquital to the Rio Grande. A storm surge watch is also in effect for the Texas coast.

Large swells are expected to affect much of the US Gulf Coast, with life-threatening conditions.
