Hurricane Beryl Knocks Out Power for 1 Million in Texas, Causes Heavy Flooding

More than 1 million customers lost power as Hurricane Beryl hit the Texas coast, with CenterPoint Energy in Houston being hit hard. The storm has caused widespread road closures and dangerous driving conditions, with rising waters affecting Houston and flood warnings issued along the Texas coast. The Texas Department of Insurance offers these tips for staying safe on the roads:

  • Avoid puddles and low-lying areas to prevent hydroplaning.
  • Stay on higher ground by driving in middle lanes, as water pools on outer edges.
  • Keep headlights on for improved visibility and safety, even in daylight.
  • Use turn signals early to warn other drivers of your intentions.
  • Brake safely by lifting off the accelerator and applying brakes lightly, watching for sudden stops.
  • Avoid sharp turns and quick maneuvers to prevent skids and accidents.
