Target no longer accepting personal checks from July 15

Target has announced that it will no longer accept personal checks as a form of payment starting July 15.

"Due to extremely low volumes, we'll no longer accept personal checks starting July 15. We have taken several measures to notify guests in advance to aid an easy and efficient checkout experience." — Target

The news was first reported by Minneapolis TV station KARE, noting that Target will continue to accept personal checks through its Circle Week sale, which runs July 7-13.

Alternative payment methods:

  • Target Circle Cards (formerly RedCard)
  • Cash
  • Digital wallets
  • SNAP/EBT
  • Buy now, pay later services
  • Credit and debit cards

Customers can still use personal checks by mail for Circle Card payments.

The move away from personal checks reflects a broader trend, with Federal Reserve Financial Services reporting that consumer use of personal checks has declined to just 3% in 2023, down from 7% in 2020.

Other major retailers that don't accept personal checks include Aldi and Whole Foods Markets.
