Trail Construction to Impact Austin Hikers and Bikers
Even as temperatures rise, Austin's trails remain a popular summer destination. However, several trail detours and closures are currently in effect, or will be implemented in the coming months, much to the disappointment of many.
The Trail Conservancy, the nonprofit overseeing the Ann & Roy Butler Hike and Bike Trail, has announced the following:
Longhorn Dam
A new pedestrian bridge construction started July 8, detouring the Butler Trail for 18 months.
- Longhorn Shores and tunnel from Krieg Fields closed, but Krieg Fields remain accessible.
- Eastbound vehicular traffic on Canterbury St is closed, with one-way westbound flow.
- Canterbury Park and its parking lot are inaccessible.
- The unnamed peninsula near Holly St is closed.
- Ann and Roy Butler Hike/Bike Trail detours northbound along Pleasant Valley Rd, continuing westbound on Canterbury St, and southbound on Pedernales and Holly St.
Waller Creek Confluence
Phase 2 of Waterloo Greenway construction begins July 22, ending in late August (weather permitting), with the building of lattice bridges, the Lagoon Overlook, and the Leaf Deck.
- A temporary trail east of the existing Waller Creek bridge will divert trail users.
- Waller Creek crossing will remain on the current bridge.
- Construction traffic may interrupt trail use during work hours (7 a.m.-7 p.m., Mon-Fri).
Stay up to date with these developments to plan your outdoor excursions accordingly.
