Texas Continues Population Boom, Despite Southern Border Location

Recent census data show a population boom in Texas from 2020-2023, with:

  • Texas cities, counties, and metros dominating top 10 lists of annual growth. (U.S. Census Bureau figures)
  • Growth centered on the "Texas Triangle": Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin.
  • Since 2000, Texas has outpaced nearly every state in population growth.
  • Domestic migration a slightly larger factor than international migration.

The surge in population is mainly credited to the state's allure of a relatively lower cost of living compared to many other states and the absence of personal income tax. - Office of the State Governor

Texas Growth by the Numbers:

  • 8 of the 10 fastest-growing counties are in Texas, with Harris, Collin, and Montgomery Counties leading.
  • The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex added 152,598 residents, closely followed by Houston (+139,789) and Austin-San Marcos (+50,000).
  • San Antonio-New Braunfels also made the list with a population increase of 48,000.
  • Midland, within the Permian Basin, is the 7th fastest-growing metro area nationally due to oil and gas job growth.

While Texas cities boom, population declines were dispersed across 8 states, mainly the South and West, including 3 entries from California.
