Texas Population Boom

Texas is booming. New Census data reveals that between 2020 and 2023, Texas dominated the top 10 lists for annual population growth across cities, counties, and metro areas.

Despite its southern border location, Texas's growth is primarily due to domestic migration, attracted by a lower cost of living and no personal income tax. The state is also experiencing rapid economic growth, luring major companies.

Texas Triangle's Growth

The "Texas Triangle"—Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio, and Austin—saw unprecedented growth.

  • Dallas-Fort Worth: +152,598 residents
  • Houston: +139,789 residents
  • Austin-San Marcos: +50,000 residents
  • San Antonio-New Braunfels: +48,000 residents

Fastest-Growing Counties

Eight of the top 10 fastest-growing counties in the US are in Texas:

  • Harris County: +53,788 (reinforcing its rank as the 3rd most populous county in the US)
  • Collin County: +36,364 (part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington metro area)
  • Montgomery County: +31,800 (north of Harris County)

While Texas thrives, population declines were seen across eight states, notably including California, with three entries on this list, including San Francisco.

The Texas boom extends beyond the famous Triangle, with Midland, known for its oil and gas industry, also experiencing rapid growth, attracting young professionals. The state's expansion shows no signs of stopping, continuing to lure Americans with its economic opportunities and lower costs of living.
