In a heated meeting, the Bastrop City Council approved a 4-1 resolution apologizing to Sheila Lowe, chair of the Bridging Bastrop Board, for remarks made by Council Member Cheryl Lee. Lee had criticized the work of the board, which the council renamed from the "Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Board" on July 9. Lee voted against the apology resolution, which was sponsored by members Cynthia Meyer and Kevin Plunkett. Mayor Lyle Nelson questioned the offense caused, and the council's support for its boards, citing recent supermajority requirements and commissioner removals.

Transparency and divisão:

The council debated lowering the quorum to improve transparency, a proposal by Member Kerry Fossler to prevent private discussions among members. Fossler said, "The people's business needs to stay in front of the people... are we going to say it?" Residents were divided, with some accusing Fossler of distractions and wasting time, while others supported increased transparency. The council will vote on rule changes, including the quorum, on Aug. 13.
