J.D. Power: Car Owner Satisfaction Increases, but Infotainment Systems Fall Flat

JD Power's latest APEAL study shows a slight improvement in driver satisfaction with 2024 car models, up two points from 2023, scoring 847 out of 1,000.

Brand Leaders:

  • Porsche (premium)
  • MINI (mass market)
  • Hyundai Motor Group (most segment awards)
  • BMW 7 Series (highest-ranked model)

"Traditional manufacturers have listened to the Voice of the Customer...They’re launching enhanced vehicles that are more in line with what customers want." – Frank Hanley, J.D. Power

The study is based on ~100,000 owners' responses about 2024 models owned for 90+ days (July '23 - May '24).

Key Findings:

Electric Vehicles: Non-Tesla EV owners reported higher satisfaction (877) than Tesla (870). Tesla struggles with new customers, despite brand loyalists' satisfaction.

Infotainment Systems: Drivers are unhappy with carmakers' infotainment. 25% cited audio issues when switching sources, 23% menu problems. Apple CarPlay/Android Auto users are happier.

"It begs the question whether automakers are actually in tune with the desires and needs of their customers." – Frank Hanley
