Biden's Austin Visit Coincides with Civil Rights Act Anniversary

President Joe Biden will speak at the Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) Presidential Library in Austin, Texas, on Monday, marking the 60th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act. This is his first visit to the city since taking office.

“As President Biden has said, the fight to protect our rights and freedoms is never finally won – and that is true for the rights secured by the Civil Rights Act. That’s why it is vitally important that we recognize the 60th anniversary of the law President Johnson called a ‘promise of a new birth of freedom’ by recommitting ourselves to the ongoing work of forming a more perfect union.” – White House Official

The visit comes after two postponements: the initial plan was scheduled for the day after the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump, and the second attempt was scrapped due to Biden's COVID-19 diagnosis.

Biden's Texas trip takes on a new significance as, just this month, he announced he would not run for a second term, bowing to pressure from within his own party. This paves the way for Vice President Kamala Harris, his likely successor, who has received his swift endorsement.
