Joe Biden visits Austin, Texas, amid heavy security and road closures

President Joe Biden postponed his visit to Austin following the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Biden is now scheduled to speak at the Lyndon B. Johnson Presidential Library on Monday.

"The attempted assassination of Donald Trump has postponed President Biden's visit to Austin."

As with all presidential visits, Biden’s trip will cause widespread road closures and travel delays. The Texas Department of Transportation confirmed “rolling closures” on major roads, including I-35 and SH 71.

Live updates:

Austinites should prepare for potential travel scenarios:

  • Rolling road closures from Austin-Bergstrom Int'l Airport to LBJ Library.
  • Biden arrives ~2:30 p.m.; possible routes: I-35 N to Dean Keaton St. (Trump and Obama's route), SH 183 to Airport Blvd, then Manor Rd, or Hwy 183 to E 7th St (less likely due to multiple street closures).
  • Manor Rd & Red River St, near LBJ Library, will likely have partial closures.

Austin-Bergstrom Int'l Airport warns travelers of potential 15-30 minute delays.

Biden’s Austin itinerary:

  • ~3 p.m. – Biden delivers a livestreamed speech commemorating Lyndon B. Johnson signing the Civil Rights Act 60 years ago.

Past presidential visits:

Austin hosted:

  • Vice President Biden in 2013
  • President Obama several times during & after his presidency
  • President Trump met with supporters like Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick
