Activist, adventurer, Austin legend: Diving petition honors Otis Pousson

Otis Pousson was the quintessential free spirit, a dragonfly above Barton Springs' surface, winning medals for his flips & skips. Now, over 1,100 want the diving board named for him.

“Otis was an Austin legend and a good man... He was probably the leader of that pack [of punks, hippies & skaters].”
- Zada Owens, Facebook

Untrained, but appearing to fly, Pousson embodied the spirit of Austin. A natural-born adventurer, he worked at Whole Foods, became a master electrician, and finally, an inspector for Austin-Bergstrom International Airport.

Diagnosed with Parkinson's at 51, he had gone undiagnosed for over a decade. The disease took his life just over a year later, on May 2, aged 52.

Friends & family remember Pousson's laugh, his fearlessness, and his integral role in the city's skateboard, punk rock, and hippie scenes.

A petition to name the Barton Springs diving board after Pousson is part of a multi-pronged campaign, including a memorial that filled Umlauf Sculpture Garden.

His sister, Bliss Rosanbalm, reflects on the importance of early diagnosis and treatment, and the outpouring of support from the city, with coworkers donating overtime and sick time to make up for his lost wages.

Born in 1972, Pousson's life mirrored Austin's transformation. He leaves a legacy of resilience, community, and a life fully lived.
