False Claim ties Death of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee to Secret Service 'Oversight'

A recent post on social media platform X link claims:

"Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle confirmed that Rep. Shiela Jackson was involved in the Oversight of the Secret Service. Rep. Jackson passed away 6 days after the assassination attempt on Donald Trump. This is one of the strangest coincidences of the year."

The post includes a clip of Cheatle's testimony, in which she offers condolences to Jackson Lee's family. Known QAnon and misinformation accounts on X and other social media platforms shared similar claims.

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Houston, passed away on July 19, 2024, at the age of 74. In June, she had announced a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. Although the cause of her death has not been publicly reported, there is no evidence to suggest it is suspicious or linked to her work.

While it's true that Cheatle mentioned Jackson Lee's "oversight" during her testimony, we found no reports showing Jackson Lee's work focused specifically on the Secret Service. The Secret Service falls under the Department of Homeland Security, and Jackson Lee was a member of the Homeland Security Committee, so some of her work may have touched on the agency. However, this does not support claims that her death was connected to Secret Service oversight. Jackson Lee herself condemned the attack on Trump and praised the efforts of the Secret Service.

The claim that Rep. Jackson Lee's death was linked to her "oversight" of the Secret Service is false.
