The True Cost of Keeping Cool: Texas Edition

As Texas swelters under the summer sun, its residents are increasingly reliant on air conditioning for relief. With temperatures consistently exceeding 90°F, it's no wonder that the state leads the nation in residential energy consumption. But at what cost?

Finding the Fine Balance

The magic number, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, is 78°F. Kept at this temperature, your AC promises the most savings without sacrificing comfort. Each degree lower comes at a price: a 6% to 8% increase in energy use. So, while you might be tempted to turn your AC down to arctic levels, remember the sweet spot of 78.

Away from Home?

Texas Energy recommends a nifty trick to save some cash when you're out. Setting your thermostat to 85°F while away can reduce your yearly costs by up to 10%. But weigh this against the duration of your absence and how long it'll take to cool down again.

Tips to Stay Cool and Eco-Friendly

The City of Austin's Office of Sustainability offers these tips to keep your bills low and your home comfortable:

  • Block the Sun: Close blinds, especially on south- and west-facing windows, to prevent up to 40% of summer heat from seeping in.
  • Cook Smart: Ovens emit heat, so opt for the microwave, outdoor grill, or meals that don't require cooking.
  • Smart Thermostats: Upgrade to a Wifi-enabled thermostat to control your AC remotely and possibly earn incentives.
  • Power Down: Turn off lights and electronics in empty rooms. Even on standby, devices generate heat and guzzle energy.
  • Circulate Air: Ceiling fans set to rotate counterclockwise will keep air optimized for cooling. Turn them off when not needed, and try an old-school trick: place ice in front of a fan for a quick cooldown.
  • Strategic Gardening: Plant trees and tall perennials for natural shade. In Central Texas, tree-planting season is October through March.

Stay cool, Texas, and remember, every degree matters!
