Tropical Wave Near Leeward Islands Could Develop into Storm

  • While it's too early to tell if Texas will be impacted, the storm could move into the Gulf of Mexico.
  • Florida is currently forecasted to be more at risk from this system.

  • If the system strengthens, the next named storm will be Debby.
  • Earlier this month, Hurricane Beryl became the earliest Category 4 and 5 hurricane on record before making landfall in Texas.
  • The NHC warns that oceans are likely to transition into La Niña, bringing an 'above-normal' hurricane season to Texas.
  • La Niña, "little girl" in Spanish, is a climate phenomenon characterized by lower surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean near the equator.
  • This could lead to a "hyperactive" hurricane season in the Atlantic basin, with up to 33 named storms predicted.

"It's important for all residents to remain vigilant and prepared as we head further into hurricane season," said an NHC spokesperson.
