Heat Proves Deadly for Hikers This Summer

A 69-year-old man collapsed and died on Parson's Trail in Clarkdale, Arizona, due to dehydration and high blood pressure, according to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office. The tragic incident is the latest in a string of heat-related deaths in the American Southwest.

"His family members tried to perform CPR, but it was not effective, and cell reception was poor, making it hard to call 911." -- Police Statement

Heat-Related Hiking Deaths This Summer:

  • Scott Sims, 69, from Austin, TX: Collapsed and died in Grand Canyon National Park, AZ, in late June.
  • Jurgen Fink, 61, from Germany: Struggled with heat at Death Valley National Park, CA. Found by visitors, but pronounced dead later.
  • Albino Herrera Espinoza, 52, and Beatriz Herrera, 23: Father and daughter died at Canyonlands National Park, UT, after getting lost and running out of water.
  • Belyruth Ordóñez, 30: Found dead at Snow Canyon State Park, UT, while her parents suffered from heat exhaustion.
  • Unnamed 56-year-old female: Died near Quail Creek State Park, UT, due to high temperatures and dehydration.
