Potential Tropical Storm Debby Could Hit Atlantic This Week

The National Hurricane Center (NHC) is tracking a potential tropical storm that could impact the Lesser Antilles, the Greater Antilles, the Bahamas, and the southeastern US this week.

The NHC said in an early Wednesday advisory that a "large tropical wave" located east of the Lesser Antilles could develop into a tropical depression or storm in the coming days:

"Environmental conditions are forecast to gradually become more conducive for development while the system moves west-northwestward over the southwestern Atlantic... interests in the Lesser Antilles, Greater Antilles, Bahamas, and southeastern US should monitor its progress."

The disturbance has a 60% chance of formation in the next 48 hours and a 60% chance across the next seven days, the NHC said. If it strengthens into a tropical storm, it will be named Debby, the fourth named storm of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

As we enter the peak months of August, September, and October, water temperatures are at their warmest, wind shear is lower, and humidity is increased—all factors that contribute to the formation of hurricanes.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, with the peak of the season on September 10.
