Watermelon: To Keep or Chuck?

Watermelons stored in hot conditions, or slightly damaged, may explode due to the build-up of excess gas produced by natural fermentation.

Beware the Exploding Watermelons!

Watermelons can be volatile, and sometimes they spontaneously explode. This bizarre phenomenon occurs due to the fermentation process, which is triggered when microorganisms enter a damaged watermelon and begin to feast, especially in high summer temperatures. The process creates a build-up of gas and pressure, similar to winemaking, eventually leading to a putrid, maggot-infested explosion.

The Risks of Fermented Watermelon

Consuming a fermented watermelon is not advisable. While natural fermentation may not always be harmful, it can lead to:

  • Harmful bacteria
  • Mold growth
  • A vile taste and stomach-churning aroma

Signs Your Watermelon is a Ticking Time Bomb

Keep an eye and nose out for these warning signs, and throw away your melon before it's too late:

  • An unusual, putrid smell
  • White foaming
  • Fizziness
  • Swelling
  • Soft spots
  • Textural changes
  • Excessive sweetness
