Guide to Texas Slang

Texans have their own colorful lingo, from "Jeetyet?" to "fixin' to," offering a unique, local twist to standard English.

Texas has a language all its own. From "jeetyet" to "fixin' to," the Lone Star State's slang is as vast as the state itself. Here's your guide to Texan and Southern slang:

Jeetyet? - "Did you eat yet?" Often shortened to "jeet?" or "j'alleat?"

All get out - Emphasizing something to a great degree. "It's hot as all get out" = it's extremely hot.

Gimme some sugar - A request for kisses, or a term of endearment.

Fixin' to - About to do something. "I'm fixin' to go to the pool."

All y'all - Referring to a group of people.

All hat, no cattle - Someone who talks big but doesn’t deliver.

Bless your heart - Used patronizingly when someone does or says something foolish/inappropriate.

Coke - Any soft drink. Don't bring a Texan a Coca-Cola unless they specify.

The - Texans add "the" before store names, e.g., "The Walmart."

18-wheeler - A semi-truck/trailer-truck.

General Dollar - Dollar General.

Walmark/Walmarts - Walmart.

Warsh - To wash something.

Kolache - A pig-in-a-blanket/sausage roll, unless you're in West, Texas, where it's the traditional fruit-filled pastry.

Skeeters - Mosquitoes

Icebox - Refrigerator

Corn-fed - Robust and strong, like farm-raised livestock.

'Nuther - Short for "another," often used with "whole."
