Potential Tropical Storm Debby Threatens Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, and Florida

The National Hurricane Center is monitoring a "well-defined tropical wave" that could become Tropical Storm Debby this weekend. The system is currently moving over Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, bringing showers and thunderstorms to the region.

"A tropical depression could form this weekend or early next week over the eastern Gulf of Mexico or far southwestern Atlantic Ocean, including in the vicinity of Florida," NHC advisory.

While the NHC predicts little development over the next two days, the chances of a tropical cyclone forming increase to 60% as the system moves west-northwest over the Greater Antilles. If its winds reach 39 mph, it will be named Tropical Storm Debby, the fourth named storm of the predicted active 2024 Atlantic hurricane season.

The hurricane center advises interests in the Greater Antilles, Bahamas, and Florida to monitor the storm's progress. The peak of the Atlantic hurricane season (June 1 - Nov. 30) is typically in September and early October due to ideal storm formation conditions, including warm ocean temperatures and low wind shear.
