National Root Beer Float Day: How to Get a Free Float and a Brief History of the Beverage

National Root Beer Float Day is celebrated annually on the first Tuesday of August. This year, that falls on August 6. The day commemorates the invention of the popular float by Frank Wisner, a tavern owner in Colorado, in 1893. Wisner called his creation a "Black Cow Mountain," inspired by the Cow Mountain range near Pikes Peak. The name was eventually shortened to "Black Cow."

To celebrate, A&W restaurants across the US are offering a free small root beer float on Tuesday, August 6, from 2 pm to 8 pm. No purchase is necessary, but donations are suggested for Disable American Veterans, a nonprofit that A&W has supported through this promotion, contributing over $1 million.

Liz Bazner, A&W's VP of marketing and innovation, jokingly addressed the weight of their floats:

“A&W’s iconic Root Beer Float is without a doubt one of the heaviest drinks in the quick-service restaurant industry. It’s so heavy that we worried we might be missing out on a whole untapped market of folks that simply can’t handle its hugeness. This National Root Beer Float Day, we wanted to get everyone pumped up and ready to enjoy their free float.”

A&W is also offering a free root beer float on your birthday when you join their Rooty’s Mug Club (ages 13+).

If you can't make it to an A&W, making a root beer float is simple: just combine vanilla ice cream and root beer. For a more adventurous take, check out Emeril Lagasse's recipe, which includes bananas, hot fudge, shaved chocolate, and optional bourbon.
