Sales Tax Break in Texas This Weekend. Texans get a brief tax respite from their state's onerous sales tax this weekend on eligible school supplies.

As Texas students, teachers, and parents prepare for the upcoming school year, the state's tax-free weekend provides an opportunity to save money on essential school supplies and clothing.

When:

  • The tax-free holiday begins Friday, August 9, and extends through midnight on Sunday, August 11, 2024.

What's exempt:

What's not exempt:

  • Items costing $100 or more, clothing subscription boxes, athletic activity clothing/footwear, and items used to make/repair clothing are among the exclusions.

Online purchases:

  • Qualifying items are exempt from sales tax regardless of the purchasing method (online, in-store, mail, etc.) as long as the sale occurs during the designated period.

Refunds:

  • If you pay sales tax on qualifying items during the holiday, you can request a refund from the seller or file a claim directly with the Texas Comptroller using Form 00-985: Assignment of Right to Refund.
