Texas, a Poor Choice for Movers in 2024?

Despite its allure for big tech and millions of new residents, Texas ranks as the third-worst state to move to in 2024.

ConsumerAffairs study analyzed all 50 states and DC, and the results are surprising for the Lone Star State.

The Rankings:

  • Overall: 49
  • Affordability: 41
  • Economy: 37
  • Education and Health: 51 (worst in the country)
  • Quality of Life: 16
  • Safety: 38

Texas ranks low across the board, except for "Quality of Life."

Why the Poor Showing?

Geographic trends play a part: No Southern state made the top 10 best list.

The worst states are all in the South and West:

  1. California
  2. New Mexico
  3. Texas
  4. Louisiana
  5. Alaska

While the best are spread across the country:

  1. Utah
  2. New Hampshire
  3. Idaho
  4. Minnesota
  5. Massachusetts

Texas: Still a Magnet for Migrants and Big Business

Texas has attracted over 9 million people between 2000 and 2022 with its:

  • Declining home prices
  • Plentiful jobs
  • No personal income tax

SpaceX and Chevron have also moved their HQs from California to Texas.

So, despite its poor rankings, Texas remains a desirable destination for many.

How the Study Measured Up:

ConsumerAffairs measured states across five categories:

  • Affordability: Income, taxes, and regional prices.
  • Economy: Poverty, population growth, unemployment, and home values.
  • Education and Health: Insurance, care quality, and graduation rates.
  • Quality of Life: Roads, weather, and public transportation usage.
  • Safety: Crime rates and law enforcement ratios.
