Texas Ranked Third-Worst State to Move to in 2024, Study Finds
- Despite its appeal to some, Texas ranks 49th overall out of 51 places.
- Low scores across the board, except for "quality of life."
- California, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Alaska make up the rest of the bottom five.
The Study
ConsumerAffairs analyzed all 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., on five factors: affordability, economy, education and health, quality of life, and safety.
Texas scored poorly, despite its reputation and historical migration trends.
Texas' Rankings
- Overall: 49
- Affordability: 41
- Economy: 37
- Education and Health: 51
- Quality of Life: 16
- Safety: 38
Why is Texas Unattractive?
The Lone Star State has long lured residents with low taxes and a strong job market. However, the study suggests there's more to a desirable location than these factors. Texas scored poorly on education and health, and only "quality of life" saved it from the bottom spot.
Southern States Struggle
Texas isn't alone; no Southern state made the top 10. California, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Alaska join Texas in the bottom five.
The Top Five States
- Utah
- New Hampshire
- Idaho
- Minnesota
- Massachusetts
