Austin Confirms Lisa Davis as New Police Chief

Lisa Davis has been confirmed as the new chief of the Austin Police Department (APD), becoming the second woman to permanently lead the department. The City Council announced the confirmation on Tuesday.

"I am honored to be joining the Austin community and the Austin Police Department during this critical time," said Chief Davis. "I am committed to working collaboratively with the community and the men and women of APD to enhance public safety and improve trust."

Davis, an assistant chief with the Cincinnati Police Department, was chosen by City Manager T.C. Broadnax, who made the announcement on Friday. She beat out Jeffrey Norman, chief of the Milwaukee Police Department, for the role.

The APD has been without a permanent chief since August 2021 when former chief Joseph Chacon retired. The department was led by interim chief Robin Henderson, who did not apply for the permanent position.

A Challenging Road Ahead

Hiring a new chief was a priority for the city manager, as the department faces ongoing challenges, including vacancies and low morale among officers. The city and the Austin Police Association, the union representing officers, have also been without a long-term contract for over a year.

"My commitment is to listen to the community, to hear your concerns, and to work with the men and women of the Austin Police Department to make this a department that you can be proud of," Chief Davis said.

Davis, a U.S. Navy veteran, brings over 30 years of experience to the role, starting her career as an officer in her hometown of Cincinnati. She was a finalist for chief roles in Cincinnati and Oakland.
