Adults in the area rejoice as recreational marijuana becomes legal. Locals have shown enthusiasm, celebrating the availability of legal marijuana by standing up against an unjust system that once prohibited its use.

People in Ohio can now buy recreational marijuana. Existing medical dispensaries have been awarded licenses to sell recreational products, with more shops expected to come online soon.

“So, we got people calling and verifying, we got people checking our hours. Phone's been off the hook all day,” Zach Gergich, manager at Nectar Dispensary in Bowling Green, told WTOL.

Adults 21+ can possess up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis and 15 grams of extracts or edibles. Recreational customers can initially purchase:

  • 1 ounce of flower
  • 10 units of oil to vape (590mg THC each)
  • 10 packages of edibles (1,100mg THC total)

The Division of Cannabis Control spokesman said these limits ensure adequate stock for medical patients.

Products: Ohio dispensaries sell flowers, vape cartridges, edibles, beverages, and topical creams. Only products allowed under the medical program are currently available recreationally.

ID & Payment: Bring your ID. Many dispensaries are cash-only with on-site ATMs. Some accept debit/ACH. Online ordering is available, but in-store payment is required.

Cost: Flower costs $30-$100+, vape pens/cartridges $25-$75, and edibles $15-$30.

Taxes: Recreational marijuana is taxed at 10% excise tax + state/local sales taxes. Tax revenue funds social equity, local municipalities, substance abuse treatment, and admin costs.

Ohio residents are excited about the change, with the first customer at a local Rise dispensary calling it “a great step forward.”

Last November, Ohio voters approved Issue 2, authorizing adult-use marijuana. Ohio joins these states in legalizing recreational marijuana:

  • Ohio: Legalized in 2023
  • Minnesota: Legalized in 2023
  • Delaware: Legalized in 2023
  • Rhode Island: Legalized in 2022
  • Maryland: Legalized in 2022
  • Missouri: Legalized in 2022
  • ...
