Algeria Boxer: Questions Over Olympic Eligibility

Khelif is a woman, and has always been a woman. Everything else is noise.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif is facing scrutiny over her gender identity, with some questioning her eligibility to compete in the 2024 Olympics. Khelif and Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan were deemed eligible, drawing controversy, especially after Italian boxer Angela Carini quit a bout against Khelif. Social media users and public figures claimed Khelif is a man, but these claims lack context and are not substantiated. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed Khelif's female identity and participation in past Olympics. The eligibility standards are determined by an ad hoc unit set up by the IOC, which removed recognition from the International Boxing Association (IBA) due to governance issues. The IBA's role in disqualifying Khelif and Lin in 2023 and their confidential tests have added to the controversy. Khelif called her disqualification a "conspiracy." The details and validity of IBA's actions are uncertain, with the IOC reiterating passport-based gender identification for the Olympics.
