Heat Dome to Bring Dangerous Temperatures to Texas

Large swaths of Texas are bracing for extreme heat as a "heat dome" is predicted to settle over the region, bringing temperatures above 105°F.

"The heat dome can stretch over several states and linger for days to weeks, leaving people, crops, and animals below to suffer through stagnant, hot air that can feel like an oven." - William Gallus, Professor of Atmospheric Science at Iowa State University.

The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories and excessive heat warnings for much of Texas, with "feels-like" temperatures expected to exceed 110°F in some areas. While North Texas may get a brief reprieve over the weekend, with temperatures dipping into the 90s, the heat is expected to intensify again next week.

What is a Heat Dome?

A heat dome occurs when a region of high pressure traps heat over an area, causing stagnant, oven-like conditions that can persist for extended periods.

Heat Safety Tips:

  • Never leave people or pets in a closed car.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Seek air-conditioned spaces or shade to avoid prolonged exposure to the heat.

Texans are urged to take precautions and stay vigilant as this intense heat wave persists.
