More than 100 neglected animals, including dogs, horses, birds, and even "pet cockroaches," were rescued from a home in Riverside County, CA, following the Nixon Fire which ravaged over 5,000 acres. A sheriff's deputy, while evacuating civilians, noticed the house in Aguanga and alerted Animal Services.

"This was one of the more unique investigations we’ve had, considering the wide range of critters now needing our assistance," - Animal Services Director Erin Gettis source

A House of Horrors for Animals

  • Dozens of animals, including 3 horses and 6 goats, were discovered in terrible conditions.
  • Other animals rescued: parakeets, mice, chickens, cockatiels, quail, geese, a turkey, and "pet cockroaches."
  • Multiple dogs were also rescued prior to the official seizure.
  • Many animals were taken to the San Jacinto Valley Animal Campus for treatment; a mini horse and sheep, believed to be a pair, were taken to the county shelter.

The owner was absent during the seizure and failed to respond to prior notices. The Riverside County Animal Services will pursue felony animal cruelty charges with the District Attorney's office.
