Cash App settles, pays out $15 million after 2021 data breach
Mobile payment service mandated to compensate users after personal information of millions was exposed.
Cash App has settled a class action lawsuit following a data breach in 2021 that exposed the personal information of millions of users. The breach led to a lawsuit against Cash App Investing and Block Inc., alleging they "failed to exercise reasonable care in securing and safeguarding consumer information."
The lawsuit stated:
"In December 2021, Cash App Investing suffered a data breach that resulted in the unauthorized public release of the personally identifiable information of 8.2 million current and former Cash App Investing customers."
A former employee accessed and downloaded user data without authorization, according to the suit.
