Broccoli Hair: The Bizarre New Hair Trend Sweeping Gen Z

Broccoli is making an unexpected comeback – but not on your dinner plate. Teenage boys are now demanding an unusual new hairstyle dubbed "broccoli hair" that mimics the veggie's florets.

"It's achieved by cutting the hair in short, uneven layers that resemble the florets of broccoli. The sides can be completely buzz-cut short or shaved very close to a fade." – René Fris, celebrity hairstylist

According to PopSugar and Marie Claire, the style is a mix of a taper fade and a bowl cut, with some even getting perms for that "curly and unruly" floret look.

While the trend has blown up recently, it's been around since at least 2021, with its earliest reference on 4Chan, where it was dubbed the "Zoomer Perm" as per KnowYourMeme. It's since become a source of meme-ing and ridicule online, with The New York Post reporting teens are begging their parents to fund this pricey look.

Why Broccoli Hair?

Celebrity hairstylist Jasmine Burnside tells Marie Claire it's "highly desirable" as it's versatile:

"Whether you're looking for a quirky and fun style or a trendy and fashionable cut, [it] can be adapted to fit different genders, hair types, and personal styles."

TikTok influencer Kris Grippo tells GQ the trend has evolved from the meme-worthy "super tight, super curly" perm to a looser, more relaxed perm, adding it "looks good on everyone" and is here to stay.

Haters Gonna Hate

Of course, not everyone is a fan. The奇eck out internet reactions below:
