Brazil Plane Crash Leaves 62 Dead, Investigators Eye Icing as Possible Cause

Investigators are working to determine the cause of a plane crash in Brazil that killed all 62 passengers and crew on board. Voepass Flight 2283, an ATR-72 twin-engine turboprop, was en route from Cascavel to São Paulo's Guarulhos Airport when it crashed in a residential neighborhood in Vinhedo on Friday.

Cause of the Crash

While investigators have not yet determined the cause, some speculate that icing may have played a role. Voepass COO Marcel Moura acknowledged that ice was a possibility, but said the plane's de-icing system was operational. Brazilian crash investigator Celso Faria de Souza agreed that icing could have caused the plane to stall and spiral.

"Today ice was predicted (at the altitudes the plane was flying at), but within the acceptable range...But the plane is sensitive to ice, that could be a starting point." – Marcel Moura, Voepass COO

However, the plane's pilots did not report any emergencies or adverse weather conditions, according to Brazil's air force. The plane was flying normally until 1:21 p.m., when it stopped responding to calls, crashing around 1:30 p.m. local time.

Impact and Recovery

The crash site was in a residential area, but miraculously, no residents were hurt. One home was damaged after the plane crashed into its backyard. Witness Daniel de Lima described seeing the plane spiraling horizontally before falling from the sky and exploding.

"I almost believe the pilot tried to avoid a nearby neighborhood, which is densely populated." – Daniel de Lima, Witness

By Saturday afternoon, 31 bodies had been recovered, including those of the pilot and co-pilot. The "black box" has been retrieved and is being analyzed. São Paulo's governor, Tarcísio Gomes de Freitas, declared three days of mourning for the victims.
