Readers respond with creative names for land near Lady Bird Lake

After we asked readers to name an unnamed peninsula on Lady Bird Lake, the suggestions came pouring in.

Some chose to ignore the criteria and suggest names of people who are still living or already honored, but many offered creative and thoughtful options.

Skip Davis suggests we "stop naming places after people" and calls it "The Town Lake Peninsula." Stephen Pruitt recommends postponing any naming and instead focuses on cleaning up the lake.

Criselda Corelia Kelley puts forward "La Isla" or "La Isla Bonita," a subtle Madonna reference. Jennifer Bristol goes with "Blue Heron Point," a nod to the magnificent bird often spotted in the city's waters.

Readers also offered a variety of potential namesakes, including:

  • Fred Cantu, suggested by Chad Kissinger's wife
  • Cisco Point, after Rudy "Cisco" Cisneros, proposed by Lane Rockford Orsak
  • The late American-Statesman humor columnist John Kelso, from Bob Gier
  • Molly Ivins, suggested by Teresa Harrison, who "challenged power for us all!"
  • Gilbert Tuhabonye and Kirk Watson, put forward by Alicia Sankar (both living)
  • Peninsula McPeninsulaface, joked Richard Whitaker
  • Fidencio Duran, who created the murals near the lake, and Ivan, the nominator's late dog who swam there daily, suggested by Michael Agresta

Two of Austin's beloved eccentrics also received votes: Leslie Cochran, the creatively dressed mayoral candidate, and "Crazy" Carl Hickerson, who swam out to disable the starting lights for boat races on Town Lake, thus ending the disruption to the neighborhood.
