USA Today: Education Takes Center Stage in US Election with Trump's Agenda47

With former teacher Gov. Tim Walz as Kamala Harris' running mate, education is a key issue in the US election. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has outlined his Agenda47, which includes 10 proposals for "great schools leading to great jobs." Experts like Jon Valant of the Brookings Institution worry that Trump's plans are more political distractions than substantive policy changes, especially after teachers' difficult years amidst the pandemic and culture wars.

NEA Endorses Harris-Walz Ticket

National Education Association, the largest US teachers' union, backs Harris-Walz, seeking more resources and respect for teachers. NEA President Becky Pringle criticizes Trump's agenda, citing Betsy DeVos' appointment as Education Secretary. She calls for an educator in the White House.

Trump's Proposed Education Policies:

Abolish Teacher Tenure

Trump proposes rewarding states/districts that abolish tenure, adopt merit pay, and give parents voting rights for principals. Valant calls this a "direct shot" at teachers' unions, exacerbating recruitment/retention issues.

Universal School Choice

Trump supports universal school choice, allowing parents to choose public, private, or religious education. Valant warns of risks to public education, as vouchers often benefit wealthier families, potentially segregating students.

Credentialing "Patriotic" Teachers

Trump plans to reinstate the 1776 Commission, certifying "patriotic" teachers, and vetoing nationalized civics education. Valant and Pringle deem it politically driven, potentially staffed by unqualified appointees.

Pringle emphasizes the need for qualified educators who understand diverse student needs, critiquing Trump's political nature.
