Girl, 3, Hospitalized After Black Bear Attack In Montana Campground
A 3-year-old girl was hospitalized after a black bear attacked her in a tent at a campground near Custer National Forest, Montana. The bear, which had no prior history of conflicts, was likely attracted to unsecured food and garbage left near the campsite, according to authorities.

The child was in a tent at a private campground south of Red Lodge when the subadult female bear attacked around 10 p.m. Sunday. She was taken to a medical facility in Billings, while game wardens and bear specialists worked to capture the bear.
The bear was euthanized after being captured on Sunday afternoon, according to FWP, who also provided tips on how to stay safe in bear country:
- Keep a respectful distance and speak calmly if you encounter a bear.
- Travel in groups and pick up small children.
- Make yourself appear large, be extra cautious around cubs, and fight back if attacked.
- Secure all food and garbage.
