Devereaux Christopher Johnson, 47, of Canton, MI, has been charged with first-degree murder and is facing life in prison without parole. On Saturday, Johnson shot and killed his 35-year-old neighbor, Nathan Morris, following an argument over mulch in Johnson's yard. Morris was walking with his family when the confrontation occurred, and he was fatally shot after trying to calm the situation. Johnson was arrested after a standoff with police and is currently being held without bond.

Michigan GOP Chair Pete Hoekstra:

This is a senseless act of violence. And his two young daughters will grow up without a father.

Canton Police Chief Chad Baugh:

"This was a senseless act of violence toward the victim. The Canton Police Department sends our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and to the neighbors who may have witnessed this tragic event."

Nathan Morris, the victim, was a father, husband, engineer, and recent candidate for the Canton School Board. He was beloved by his community, and a fundraiser for his family has raised over $35,000. Johnson will appear in court again on August 23.
