Texas Cities with the Worst Drivers

A recent study reveals 21 Texas cities have deadlier roads than the national average, with Galveston taking the top spot for the city with the worst drivers in the state.

Texas: A Dangerous Place to Drive

Texas is known for its dangerous roads, with two of the top ten deadliest US interstates running through the state. In 2022, Texas had 17% more traffic fatalities than the national average.

Galveston: Texas' Worst Driving City

Galveston had the highest traffic fatality rate in Texas in 2022, with 35.67 deaths per 100,000 residents. The city's crash score was 72% higher than the second-worst Texas city, and nearly triple the national average. In the same year, 47% of traffic fatalities in Galveston were linked to speeding, and 42% involved driving under the influence.

League City: Texas' Safest Driving City

League City, in contrast, was found to have the safest drivers in Texas. With a crash score of 2.64, the city had only one traffic fatality linked to bad driving in 2022.

Study Methodology

Conducted by ConsumerAffairs, the study analyzed 60 Texas cities with populations of 50,000 or more, using vehicle crash data from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration's Fatality Analysis Reporting System. Crash scores were calculated based on the number of crashes and fatalities due to bad driving, speeding, driving under the influence, and positive blood alcohol content per 100,000 people.
