The Austin American-Statesman has been awarded a 2023 Edward R. Murrow Award for its breaking news coverage of a mass shooting that left six people dead and five others injured across two Texas cities.

Our newsroom understood that the community was being terrorized as this situation unfolded over several hours...and we worked to provide immediate and accurate information to a fearful city. - Courtney Sebesta, Executive Editor

The award, from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), recognizes the paper's urgent and comprehensive coverage of the rampage, which began in San Antonio and ended in Austin. The Statesman was the first outlet to report on the shootings, with a full team of reporters, photojournalists, editors, and producers providing overnight updates.

The gunman, who faces multiple charges, had a history of mental health issues and was discharged from the Army for "unacceptable conduct." This is the Statesman’s third national Murrow Award in four years. The awards celebrate journalism that "upholds the RTDNA Code of Ethics, demonstrates technical expertise, and showcases the impact of journalism as a service to the community."
