Perchlorate, a Chemical in Rocket Fuel, Contaminates Food and Water, Study Finds

Perchlorate, a chemical found in rocket fuel, has been detected in our food and water supply, with baby and children's food showing higher levels of contamination, according to a study by Consumer Reports.

"Most of the food found to be contaminated with perchlorate was children's food, like cereal and chicken nuggets." - James Rogers, Ph.D., Director of Food Safety Research and Testing at Consumer Reports

Contaminated Foods

The study analyzed a wide range of food products, and the following foods had the highest levels of perchlorate:

  • Beef burritos
  • Chicken sandwiches
  • French fries
  • Fried chicken
  • Chicken nuggets
  • Steak tacos
  • Mac and cheese
  • Rice and multigrain cereal
  • Whole milk yogurt

Health Risks

While the food tested did not contain dangerous levels of perchlorate, there is no consensus on what constitutes a "dangerous level." Consuming unsafe amounts of perchlorate can affect thyroid function, leading to possible neurodevelopment issues in children and an increased risk of Type 2 Diabetes in adults.

Solutions and Regulations

You can test your water supply for perchlorate and use a reverse osmosis filter if it is detected. Unfortunately, there is currently no way to avoid exposure through food.

The good news is that the EPA has committed to setting limits on perchlorate by November 21, 2025, marking a step towards addressing this hidden contaminant in our food and water.
