Ernesto Heads toward Bermuda, US Coast Faces Riptides

Ernesto gains steam in the Atlantic while Puerto Rico hopes for respite as it begins to mop up.

Hurricane Ernesto Regains Strength, Threatens Bermuda

Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands: 20% without power, per LUMA Energy; 258,000 without drinking water, El Nuevo Dia.

Hurricane Location & Strength: 450 miles south-southwest of Bermuda, Category 1 with 90 mph winds NHC 8 p.m. update.

Projected Path: May become Category 3 by Friday, approaching Bermuda Saturday per NHC. Could become a major hurricane with sustained winds >111 mph.

East Coast Impact: Avoiding a direct hit, but causing rip currents and high surf from Florida to Nova Scotia. National Weather Service: "Best to stay out of the ocean Friday through Sunday (at least)". Rip current warnings and high surf warnings issued for multiple areas.
